Ganoderma lucidum are known as reishi in Japan and lingzhi in China. These medicinal mushrooms, which are usually ground up and added to teas and soups or sold in capsule form, have significant health benefits.
Reishi mushrooms get their medicinal powers from two components: polysaccharides and triterpenes. Iris Benzie, professor of biomedical science in the Department of Health Technology & Informatics at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, who has been studying reishi for 15 years, tells Time magazine: "Polysaccharides are believed to stimulate white cells and the immune system and possibly be involved in preventing new blood vessel growth, which has an anticancer effect because cancer cells growing rapidly need a good blood supply and encourage blood vessel growth to nourish them. Triterpenes are believed to be ingredients that might have something to do with lowering cholesterol."
Also, Reishi mushrooms contain complex sugars known as beta-glucans that may stop cancer cells from growing and spreading, according to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. They also boost immune response, and their triterpenes may have blood pressure-lowering and anti-allergy or antihistamine effects, the cancer center says.

HERTU Investment and Temise Tanzania through Hertu Farms Project has great honor to provide consultation services for establishing SMALL SCALE MUSHROOM FARMING DEMONSTRATION SITE, in Nyarugusu Refugees Camp, Kasulu District, in Kigoma Region.
The project is funded by Church World Services (CWS); a faith base organization transforming communities around the globe through just and sustainable responses to hunger, poverty, displacement and disaster. As a global humanitarian agency, CWS works to improve self-reliance and expand livelihood opportunities of vulnerable men and women in a variety of locations and settings. Since 2015, CWS has served as the lead agency for the ACT Alliance in responding to the emergency needs of Burundian men, women and children seeking protection in Tanzania.
Under refugee and host community livelihood programs (Nyarugusu refugee camp), through REFLECT pilot project, Nutrition and livelihood program; CWS aim to establish a small scale Mushroom Farming Demonstration site.

The following services will provided;
--Construction of mushrooms houses.
 
--Provide practical hands-on training to project beneficiaries on mushroom cultivation from, substrates    preparation, farm caring and planting, fruiting, harvesting, processing, storing, package and branding, marketing, business development for mushroom, cooking methods, record keeping, and financial management.

 --Entrepreneurial skills, Mentorship and capacity building


The project was established to meet the following objectives;
--To provide hands on training on mushrooms cultivation, providing entrepreneurial skills, Business Development Services, capacity building and mentorship to the beneficiaries 25 Women to start with and expected to reach 120 beneficiaries.
--Introducing the camp and the surrounding community to the pleasures and benefits of eating mushrooms to improve their health and nutrition
--Offer hands-on learning opportunities and inspiring the beneficiaries of the project to engage in mushrooms cultivation to improve economic self-reliance and livelihoods
--To improve self-reliance and expand livelihoods opportunities of vulnerable people in the camp and surrounding community
The expected outcome of the project:
--To improving nutrition and health of the Refugees in a camp and the surrounding community at Kasulu District.
--To improve economic self-reliance and livelihoods of Refugees and the community through mushrooms cultivation.

Katika kuadhimisha siku muhimu ya  Mama Duniani (Mother's Day) HERTU Investment/ Hertu Farms na Temise Tanzania ambao moja ya malengo yao wamejikita katika kumkomboa mwanamke hasa kiuchumi, tukiamini kuwa mwanamke kumiliki uchumi wake ni moja ya fursa kubwa kwake kuweza kujiwezesha na zaidi kuleta chachu  kubwa katika ustawi wa uchumi  jamii na taifa kwa ujumla. Tumekuwa tukitoa mafunzo ya ujasiliamali, Biashara na Masoko na Kilimo cha uyoga na tukilenga zaidi kina mama na vijana. Kwa muda sasa tumekuwa na kikundi  cha wakina mama kijulikanacho kama #Wachapakazi ambapo tumewapa mafunzo ya namna bora ya kujiendesha, Biashara, Masoko, utoaji wa huduma  bora kwa wateja, uaandaji wa mipango biashara, uanzishwaji na usimamiaji wa miradi, ambapo  moja ya mradi waliojifunza ni Kilimo cha Uyoga kibiashara.

Kwa kutambua ari kubwa, hamasa,  juhudi zao, na kujituma kwao katika kutimiza ndoto na matarajio yao na kutambua umuhimu wa mwanamke katika jamii hasa  kiuchumi. Tunapenda kutangaza rasmi kuwa Kikundi hiki cha #WACHAPAKAZI chenye makao yake makuu, Mtaa wa Mafichoni, Manzese Dar es Salaam,  kiitakuwa sehemu ya wana  #MabadilikoniLazima. Na kuanzia leo ndio watakao kuwa na jukumu la kuzalisha Uyoga na bidhaa zake shambani  Hertu Farms lililopo Kijiji  cha Videte, MwanzoMgumu, Wilaya ya Kisarawe, Mkoa wa Pwani.

Hivyo tunaomba wadau wetu, na jamii kwa ujumla na  hasa wadau  wa Maendeleo kuwapa ushirikiano wa hali na mali  kama  kununua bidhaa zao, mawazo na hata kuwawezesha zaidi kiuchumi ili watimize malengo yao mengi walionayo. Nutritional value: One cup of raw oyster mushroom provides about 28 calories and 0.35 grams of fat, 2.85 grams of protein and 2 grams of fiber. The same amount provides 361 mg of potassium, 0.095 grams of Vitamin B6 and 33 µg of folate. The nutrients found in the mushroom vary when accompanied with meat or bread. It could be sautéed, stir fried or added to various dishes such as roast, stew and salads.
Health Benefits: Oyster mushrooms are mostly found in the Chinese foods. Due to its high amount of nutrients, it is widely popular. Oyster mushroom is sautéed with garlic and olive oil. They are loaded with various amounts of nutrients and vitamins which makes them a healthy diet. It is free from fat, cholesterol, gluten, low in calories and sodium. The iron found in Oyster mushrooms is high in comparison to the meat.
1. Maintain the levels of blood sugar: The insufficient amount of insulin in the body results in diabetes. The calcium is required for the insulin secretion. Vitamin D helps to reduce inflammation and raise the insulin sensitivity. The studies shows that Vitamin D helps to prevent both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
2. Immunity system: Vitamin D helps to replicate the healthy cells and protects the autoimmune conditions such as flu and common cold. It also prevents the excessive or prolonged inflammatory responses. Inflammation os the cause for autoimmune disorders and chronic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, irritable bowel syndrome, high blood pressure and digestive problems.
3. Cardiovascular conditions: Besides the balance of triglycerides and cholesterol levels, Vitamin B3 helps to reduce atherosclerosis that is hardening of arteries which may lead to the heart disease. It also assists to reduce the histamine production and inflammation along with the improvement in circulation. Vitamin B3 reduces the chances of reoccurring of heart disease or cardiac arrest in those who have already experienced. Additionally, Vitamin B3 helps to treat pellagra which is the health condition that occurs from the deficiency of niacin.
4. Skin problems: Vitamin B3 which is in the form of niacinamide helps to clear acne when it is applied topically in the skin. Niacin assists in the reduction of flare ups, skin inflammation, redness and irritation. It also helps to treat granuloma annulare and bullous pemphigoid which is a skin disease that blisters the skin, cause pain and infection.
5. Brain health: The studies show that copper has an impact on the brain pathways such as galactose and dopamine which helps to maintain the energy, mood, focus and outlook. The deficiency of copper results in fatigue, low metabolic activity, poor mood and problem in concentration. Copper also helps to utilize the antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase, Vitamin C, tyrosinase and ascorbate oxidase. This helps to prevent the damage made by free radicals in the brain and also slows down the process of ageing, neuro-degenerative diseases and cancer.
6. Cures anemia: An inadequate amount of oxygen in the blood, low red bloods cell production and the blood loss are the causes of Anemia. Vitamin B2 helps to prevent the anemia. Vitamin B2 is vital for production of red blood cells and steroid hormone synthesis. It assists in transporting the oxygen in the body and also mobilizes iron. The people with low Vitamin B2 have the high chances of sickle cell anemia and anemia. The research shows that Vitamin B2 helps to reduce the homocysteine levels in the blood.
7. Provides energy: Vitamin B converts the carbohydrate into glucose which is used as a fuel to produce energy. Vitamin B synthesizes the body and metabolizes proteins and fats. Vitamin B5 assist to rebuild muscles, tissues and organs. Vitamin B5 helps to maintain the optimum level of metabolism.
8. Prevents tooth decay: Vitamin D, phosphorus and calcium helps to form and maintain the dental health by assisting the jaw-bone mineral density, holding the teeth and tooth enamel. Children need calcium and phosphorus rich foods to develop the adult teeth and form the hard structure of teeth. Vitamin D requires phosphorus to balance the calcium and enhance absorption while forming tooth. Vitamin D reduces the gum inflammation which is related to periodontal gum disease.
9. Maintains mood: Neurotransmitter functions depend on the adequate amount of iron to maintain a positive mood. It also depends on the hormone balance such as dopamine, serotonin and others. So the deficiency of iron leads to bad sleep, poor mood, lack of motivation and low level of energy.
10. Alcoholism: Vitamin B1 assist to reduce the chances of brain disorder named as Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome which includes nerve damage, muscle movement, problem in walking and lethargy. It is caused due to the low thiamine and poor diet but is usually seen in the alcoholics. The high intake of thiamine can reduce the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal.

Hakika kabla ya kuanza kilimo hiki nami nilikuwa na mitazamo mbali mbali hasi kuhusu uyoga; lakini kwa mafunzo na uzoefu tuliupata baada ya kuingia kwenye kilimo hiki  tuliweza kupata majibu mengi na kuondokana na mawazo hasi kuhusu uyoga na kugundua kuwa uyoga ni hazina kubwa sana ambayo umuhimu wake haujatiliwa mkazo hasa kwenye nchi zinazoendelea tofauti na wenzetu hasa nchi za Asia na Ulaya;  uyoga ni kitu cha thamani sana katika jamii na nchi zao kutokana na kujua faida za uyoga kiuchumi, kiafya na kimazingira.
Kumekuwa na mitazamo mbali mbali juu ya uyoga pori na uyoga unaolimwa; wengi hudhani uyoga unaolimwa hauna virutubisho kama ule wa porini, na je Uyoga huu hauna sumu? Je ukikosea kuulima unaweza kubadilika na kuwa sumu? Kwanini uyoga huu unalimwa na wakati tumezoea kuupata porini?, Mbegu za Uyoga zinatoka wapi?
Majibu ya mitazamo hiyo ni kama ifuatavyo.
Kuna aina nyingi za kuvu(fungi) duniani, inakadiriwa zipo aina milioni moja na nusu za fungi /kuvu, aina 64,000 tu ndio zimefanyiwa utafiti na wanasayansi duniani, na kati za hizo aina 10,000-12,000 zinaweza kutoa uyoga lakini aina 2,000 za uyoga ndizo zinazotumika kwa chakula, uyoga mwingine hutumika kama dawa za kutibu maradhi mbali mbali.

Ili kuepuka baadhi ya athari za baadhi ya uyoga wenye sumu hasa ule wa porini,   wataalamu walifanya utafiti wa uyoga ili kupata uyoga usio na sumu na wenye virutubisho zaidi na unaoweza kutumia kama lishe na dawa;Ili kuepuka athari za baadhi ya uyoga sumu ambazo kwa kiasi kikubwa zinatokana na kutoutofautisha au kufananisha uyoga pori unaofanana na unaoliwa ni vizuri kulima uyoga kwa kutumia mbegu zilizofanyiwa utafiti; utafiti huu umfanywa kwa kutambua tu aina ya uyoga tu na haujafanyiwa mabadiliko yoyote ya kibailogia); na wengi hawajui kuwa uyoga pori ndio chanzo cha vijikuvu(mycelia) vinavyotumika katika utengenezaji wa mbegu za uyoga unaolimwa; na uyoga unaolimwa hauwezi kamwe kubadilika na kuwa sumu.

Kivipi uyoga ulimwe?
Kinachofanyika ni kuwa baada ya kufanya utafiti wa mbegu pia utafiti ulifanywa juu ya mazingira ambayo uyoga pori huota kwa maana ya kwenye vichuguu,chini ya miti na kwenye miti/magogo; uyoga huota huko kwa sababu ya mazingira yana chakula/viinilishe ambao uyoga kama mmea hupata chakula chake kwani hauwezi kujitengezea chakula chake kwa njia ya usanisi wa chakula (photosynthesis) yaani kutumia umbijani (chlorophyll). Hivyo tunalima uyoga kwa kutengeneza mazingira yaleyale yanayohitajika uyoga kuoata; tunatumia masalia ya mazao kama maganda ya alizeti, karanga nk majani ya mpunga, ngano; maranda ya mbao ngumu na lakini zisizo na dawa, mabaki ya miwa,pamba nk; Tunajenga nyumba za udongo na kuuzeka na nyasi  sehemu zenye joto (sehemu za baridi haziitaji nyumba za udongo na nyasi) ili kuhifadhi unyevu nyevu na baridi kama kwenye kivuli cha miti na kwenye vichuguu, na hii ili kufanya uyoga huu uwe unalimwa kipindi chote cha mwaka tofauti na wa porini ambao unapatikana kipindi cha masika tu.
Hivyo kama nchi ingewekeza kwenye utafiti wa huu uyoga pori ungeweza kulimwa au kuyalinda mazingira na kupatikana kipindi chote cha mwaka na tungeweza kuimarisha afya na kupunguza utapiamlo nchini na hata kujenga viwanda vya dawa nk; kwa nchi za wenzetu uyoga na mazao yake ni biashara kubwa sana duniani. Na kwa taarifa tu Uyoga pori huu huu unaopatikana kuna wazungu wanakuja wanafanya utafiti wao na kuupeleka kwenye soko la dunia na kuuza kwa fedha nyingi sana.
Uyoga pori pia una nafasi katika kuongeza kipato ilimradi uvunaji wake unazingatia ubora na usimamizi thabiti ya kuwa hauna sumu na pia kuhifadhi mazingira ili uendelee kuwepo.
